How Bilby works

Fences, boundary walls and gates

What the fence estimate covers

The planner prices the net length of timber fencing or a low, non-retaining stone boundary wall. Gates are separate components. The result appears under outdoor areas in the project budget; compatible fence routes share one material package. A hedge uses planting prices instead.

Boundary walls are not retaining walls

The native timber specification is an open pressure-treated fence about 1.16 m high, with posts, ordinary footings, fixings and professional installation. The stone specification is about 0.76 m high and 0.4 m deep, with a normal base. Neither includes rock drilling, major ground correction or structural retention. Even if a budget label says decorative retaining walls, that allowance uses a non-retaining boundary-wall model. Use the structural retaining explanation for a wall holding back soil. Brown stain and white paint add coating work on timber; they are not merely colour changes.

Quantities and choices

Gate openings are deducted before material length is priced. A wall height used by a fallback is an assumption, not a measured retaining height.

Native model and fallback

For the native timber model, each scenario is max(minimum, fixed setup + net metres × rate). Low/expected/high rates are 650/950/1,400 SEK/m, setup 4,000/7,000/11,000 and minimums 12,000/18,000/28,000 SEK. Native stone uses 3,000/4,500/6,000 SEK/m, setup 12,000/20,000/32,000 and minimums 30,000/45,000/70,000. The normal 0.8–1.2 m timber pedestrian gate is 4,000/7,000/11,000 SEK each. Outside the native specification, a provisional reference can use a different formula: timber at 1,000/1,700/2,800 SEK/m with minimums, or masonry at 3,500/6,000/10,000 SEK/m² with an assumed 1 m face height. These are alternative paths, not extra charges. Painting adds 220/350/550 SEK per treated m²; stain adds 120/220/350. Calculation keeps raw amounts; the display may format them.

Illustrative fence and gate

A fictional 21 m natural timber route with one 1 m gate leaves 20 m of fence. Native material costs are 17,000 / 26,000 / 39,000 SEK; adding the gate gives 21,000 / 33,000 / 50,000 SEK. Choosing white paint adds an assumed 20 × 1.1 × 2 = 44 m² of coating, or 9,680 / 15,400 / 24,200 SEK. The gate model does not add a separate gate-coating operation. This example excludes all ground correction.

What to confirm

Low and high describe procurement and installation scenarios, not a confidence interval. Tall privacy screens, powered gates, unstable soil and masonry attachments need a quote. An available supplier price replaces the estimate for the same scope; mark included work instead of adding it again. Missing or invalid geometry can retain a labelled provisional reference. It does not prove the fence is buildable.

Method and evidence

Method reviewed 18 October 2026: native fence models V2 and the national 2026 reference collection researched 16 September 2026. Contractor and material anchors support scope comparisons, not a nationwide installed tariff. Product specifications must match the intended fence; Byggmax fencing products provide material context only.
